It seems ridiculous to be talking about January when I’m still processing the fact that Christmas stuff has taken over the shops and it must be a matter of minutes before I hear East 17 singing Stay Another Day!
But here I am, already gearing up for RED January, a challenge that’s become a staple for me since I first joined in 2018.
Those cold days can be hard to push through and when I was younger it was a dark period of time when my mental health really suffered.
But RED January has helped me turn that struggle into something positive.
And we've teamed up with Waltham Forest Living Streets and Speakers Collective to create the I Like To Move It team for RED January and we would love for you to join.
So what Is RED January?
RED stands for Rise Every Day and the movement was founded by Hannah Beecham MBE, who created it after seeing firsthand the power of physical activity for mental health. Inspired by her own mum's journey with depression, Hannah knew that movement could be a lifeline for people facing low mood and isolation, especially during the winter months.
Since 2016, RED January has grown into a vibrant community across the UK.
Every January, thousands of people from all walks of life come together to support each other in the shared goal of daily movement.
Whether it’s a walk, a jog, yoga, or dancing in the kitchen, the aim is to keep moving—no rules, no minimums.
And the support of the community keeps us motivated through the grey days of winter.
I can honestly say that RED January has made January a month I now actually look forward to rather than dread.
